Start with what Whirlpool’s own page lists

Whirlpool Product Help has a page for a dryer that does not heat. It lists causes in a fixed order. First comes the heat test: a heated timed cycle for five minutes, empty, then a hand inside the drum. Then the cycle selection, because Air Only and Air/Fluff never add heat. Then the home’s venting, then the electrical supply, and for gas models the gas shut-off valve.

That order is a useful picture of the visit. A technician at your door works the same list, with meters, and finds the part that failed. Your request is faster to answer when it says which of those steps you already know: the dryer tumbles, the cycle was heated, the load came out cold.

Electric Whirlpool: the two-breaker supply

The supply side, as Whirlpool describes it: a dedicated 30-amp circuit fused on both legs, which means two breakers in the panel. The FAQ above covers what happens when one of them trips.

The same page says the supply must be 240 volts and the terminal screws at the dryer must be tight, with the dryer unplugged before anyone touches them. That is work for a technician or an electrician. If a breaker keeps tripping after it is reset, tell the company on the call.

Slow drying with good heat

Heat present, loads still damp: Whirlpool blames the vent or restricted airflow first. Its page sets a cleaning interval of one to two years for the duct to the outside, sooner if drying slows, and suggests a professional vent cleaning service for the inspection. In an Ottawa house the run often goes through a basement wall to a hood outside. A long run, elbows and a hood buried in snow all slow the air.

Capital Appliance Repair adds a point that helps with repair decisions. Its site says a restricted vent makes the dryer run hot and can blow the thermal fuse, so a replaced fuse without a cleared vent can fail again.

Gas Whirlpool dryers

Whirlpool says a gas dryer with its shut-off valve closed still turns the drum and gives no heat. Past that, the igniter, valve coils and flame sensor are gas parts. Those parts sit under s. 6 of O. Reg. 212/01, so only a certificate holder may repair or service them. Read the details on gas dryer repair.

What Ottawa firms print for the parts

B&M lists a thermal fuse or thermostat at $130 to $280, a heating element at $200 to $400 and a drive motor at $250 to $450. Express lists a drive belt at $99 to $199 and a heating element at $179 to $249. The firms count differently, so each figure belongs to the firm that printed it. The company that calls sets its own price. All figures sit on dryer repair cost.

Brands and parts

Parts availability depends on the model and the year. Express prints Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, Amana, KitchenAid and Inglis on its brand list. Put the exact plate text in the request so the company can check its parts supplier before it arrives.

Repair or replace

The half-of-new rule and the age guide are on repair or replace. Capital’s dryer page sets an installed new unit at $700 to $1,500 or more.

Who repairs your Whirlpool

An independent Ottawa company, one per request, chosen by area, Kanata to the east end. It diagnoses, quotes and repairs; ask on the call whether it also does Whirlpool warranty work. The Desk has no tie to Whirlpool and stays out of the price. The general dryer page is dryer repair, and the symptom page is dryer not heating.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Do you carry parts for my Whirlpool model, or do you order them after the diagnosis?
  2. What do I pay for the diagnosis if I turn the Whirlpool repair down?
  3. If the vent turns out to be the cause, do you clear it on the visit or refer me on?
  4. On a gas model, what is your TSSA registration number?
  5. Is the warranty term printed on the invoice next to the part?

Have this ready for the call

  • The full model number from the plate, with the serial number if you can read it
  • Gas or electric, and a photo of the plug or the gas valve
  • What the dryer does: tumbles cold, runs hot, stops mid-cycle, will not start
  • Which cycle you ran, since an air-only cycle never adds heat
  • A clear path to the dryer, and the vent exit if it runs through a basement wall

Questions people ask

How does Whirlpool say to test whether the dryer is heating?

Whirlpool’s help page says to pick a heated timed cycle, run it for five minutes with the dryer empty, then open the door and feel inside. If it is warm, the page points to drying performance, which usually means the vent. If it is cold, the fault is in the heating path.

Why does a Whirlpool electric dryer tumble with no heat?

Per Whirlpool, the electric models run on their own 30-amp circuit through a pair of breakers, motor on one side and element on the other. Lose one breaker and the drum still turns while the heat stays off. The technician checks the supply first.

Which of my brands count as Whirlpool in a request?

Write the name printed on the plate. Express Appliance Repair lists Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, Amana, KitchenAid and Inglis as separate brands, so the company that calls can say whether it carries parts for yours.

Is the Air Only setting a fault?

By Whirlpool’s account, Air Only and Air/Fluff run with the heat off from start to finish. A cold load after one of those cycles is expected, and the heat test uses a heated timed cycle.

Does Whirlpool or the repair company decide if the dryer is worth fixing?

The company that diagnoses gives you the number. In B&M’s guide, a dryer short of its eighth to tenth year earns a repair that stays under about half the price of a comparable new one. The final call is yours.
