What to ask before you book

  1. Q1What is your visit fee, and is it credited if I go ahead with the repair?
  2. Q2Do you work on my brand, and do you usually carry its drain pump and door parts?
  3. Q3Will I get the quote, parts and labour, before you start?
  4. Q4If the dishwasher has to come out from under the counter, is that in the quote?
  5. Q5What warranty comes with the repair, on the part and on the labour?

Before the visit

  • Brand, model and serial number. The plate is on the edge of the door or on the side of the tub frame; open the door to find it.
  • Any error code or blinking lights, written down or photographed.
  • What happens: water left in the tub, dirty or gritty dishes, a leak at the door, noise.
  • Whether a garbage disposer or sink plumbing was changed recently.
  • The cabinet under the sink emptied, so the shut-off valve and drain line can be reached.

Common dishwasher faults

Dishwasher faults usually look like one of these:

  • Water left standing in the bottom of the tub.
  • Dishes that come out dirty or gritty.
  • Leaks around the door seal, or water on the floor in front.
  • Loud grinding during the wash.
  • A cycle that stops partway, or lights that blink and the machine does nothing.

Write which one fits, any code or pattern of lights, and how long it has been going on.

What the technician does on the visit

The technician runs a cycle, reads any code and watches the fill, wash and drain. For water left in the tub, the drain pump and the drain path come next: a pump that hums and moves no water may be jammed. For dirty dishes, the wash pump, the spray arms, the water fill and the heater. For a leak, the door seal, the hoses and the pump seals. For grinding, the pump and anything that has dropped into it.

You get a quote, labour and parts, before work starts. Ask whether the part is an original manufacturer part. If the dishwasher is not worth fixing, the technician tells you, and the visit fee usually stays.

Repair or replace

A US study of home components (NAHB, 2007) puts a dishwasher’s typical life at about 9 years, shorter than a fridge, range or dryer in the same study. Compare the quote with the price of a comparable new dishwasher today, with installation. Consumer Reports suggests replacing when the repair would cost more than half of that.

Where the model plate is

Open the door and look along its inner edge and along the sides of the tub frame. On Whirlpool-group dishwashers the plate sits on the left side of the tub frame. Frigidaire puts it on the inside of the door or on the right side of the tub. Take a photo and add the model to the work order.

Before the technician arrives

Empty the dishwasher and clear the cabinet under the sink, so the shut-off valve and the drain connection can be reached. Put a towel on the floor in front. If the dishwasher sits in an island or next to a tight corner, say so in the work order. If it was installed in the last year or two, find the receipt: a fault still under the maker’s warranty may go to an authorized service company first.

Questions

01Water stays in the bottom of the tub. What is it?

Usually something on the drain path: a clogged filter, a kinked drain hose or a jammed drain pump. If a garbage disposer was just installed, KitchenAid notes the knockout plug may still be in its dishwasher inlet, so put that in the work order.

02The dishes come out dirty. Is that a repair?

It can be. The technician checks the filter, the spray arms, the wash pump, the water fill and the heater.

03Is it worth fixing an older dishwasher?

A US study (NAHB, 2007) puts a dishwasher’s typical life at about 9 years. Compare the quote with the price of a comparable new one today; Consumer Reports suggests replacing when the repair would cost more than half of that.

04What does the visit cost?

Ottawa firms that publish a fee charge about $80–90 + tax for the visit and diagnosis, and most waive it if you go ahead with the repair. The company confirms its own fee on the call.

05Who gets my details?

One local repair company that covers your area. If it cannot take the job, we ask you before passing the work order to another.
