What the visit fee covers
Every published Ottawa price list starts with a visit fee. B&M Canada Appliances charges $89 + tax for a residential diagnosis and credits it to the repair if you go ahead. Doctor Appliance prints $95 plus HST in one paragraph and $80 plus tax in another, and waives the fee with a repair. The fee pays for the visit, the tests and a written quote.
If you decline the repair, the fee stands. That also applies when the technician tells you the fridge fails the repair-or-replace sum.
Prices by part
The table above shows B&M’s part-by-part ranges for Ottawa and Gatineau, parts and labour together. B&M calls them typical industry ranges and treats them as a guide. Capital Appliance Repair gives $150 to $450 as the usual span and says gaskets and drain faults sit at the low end while compressor and control-board work on high-end brands runs higher. Both lists were read on 29.10.2026.
HomeStars, from 13 verified Ottawa homeowner jobs, gives an average of $286 with a spread of $140 to $600, marked as of September 2020. The figure is dated, so use it as a spread.
What moves the number
- The part. A relay costs far less than a fan motor or a control board.
- The brand and style. B&M notes that premium, built-in and some French-door and counter-depth fridges use dearer parts.
- Access. An evaporator fan behind the freezer panel takes longer than a relay swap.
- Timing. A part that must be ordered adds a second visit. B&M says it explains the timeline before you approve.
- The hour. A late-night call costs more at B&M (see the FAQ).
Sealed-system work
A compressor, refrigerant leak or sealed coil sits outside the ranges. B&M starts with a $159 + tax diagnostic and quotes the labour by phone. Capital names a failed compressor on a unit already aged 12 to 15 as an exception where replacement can make more sense. Ask whether the company does that work itself before booking.
Reading the written quote
The estimate is what the 10 per cent rule in the FAQ protects, so it has to say enough:
- The fault found, in words.
- The part, new or used, and whether it is on the truck.
- Labour and parts on separate lines, with tax.
- The treatment of the visit fee.
- The warranty on part and labour, in writing. B&M states 3 months and Doctor Appliance 90 days on its ice maker page; Capital says up to a year. Terms differ, so ask.
Repair against replacement
B&M and Capital use the same rule: repair when the fridge is under about a decade old and the bill stays under half the price of a comparable new unit. Capital puts a new fridge in Canada at $800 to $2,500 or more. A $200 fan repair on a $2,000 fridge passes. A $450 repair on an old $800 fridge is a closer call. The full reasoning is on repair or replace.

The quote you will actually hold
The ranges above belong to B&M, Capital, Doctor Appliance and HomeStars. Your fridge gets its own figure from the single independent repair company your request reaches, after its technician has run the tests. The Desk has no say in that figure.
Questions to ask the company
- What is the visit fee, with tax, and is it credited if I go ahead?
- Does your quote list the part, the labour and the tax on separate lines?
- Is there an extra charge for an evening visit or for my part of the city?
- If the fault is in the sealed system, what is quoted first and what comes after?
- If the repair turns out larger than the quote, do you stop and call me?
Have this ready for the call
- Brand, model and serial number of the fridge, and its age if you know it.
- What the fridge does, in one sentence, and when it began.
- A photo of the model tag and of any error code on the display.
- A note of when you can be home for a visit window.
- The price of a comparable new fridge, so the repair can be weighed against it.
Questions people ask
Why do two quotes for the same fridge differ?
Firms price parts differently, charge a different visit fee and may include different work. A quote that names only a total hides the difference. Ask both for the part, labour and tax on separate lines, then compare the same repair on both.
Is there an extra charge for evenings or for outer parts of the city?
B&M Canada Appliances charges $100 more for a fridge call from 9 PM to 7 AM, and an address over 30 km from downtown may draw a travel fee. The other lists on this page print no such charge. Ask on the call before you book a late visit or a rural address.
What does a compressor or sealed-system repair cost?
Both firms leave it off their price lists. B&M starts the job with a $159 + tax sealed-system diagnostic and quotes the labour by phone afterwards. This work uses refrigerant recovery equipment, so the quote follows the diagnosis and varies with the unit.
Can the final bill be higher than the quote?
Ontario.ca says the law does not allow a charge more than 10 per cent above the estimate, and anything beyond that needs the customer’s agreement. If the technician finds a second fault, ask for a revised written quote before work goes on.
How reliable is the HomeStars Ottawa average?
The HomeStars fridge figures come from 13 Ottawa homeowners and are marked as of September 2020, so prices have likely moved. The page itself was updated in August 2026. Read the $140–$600 range as a spread from 2020; today’s rates sit on the firms’ own lists.
