What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Is my part of Kanata inside your regular service area?
  2. Q2What is your visit fee, and does it change for a Kanata address?
  3. Q3Is the visit fee credited if I go ahead with the repair?
  4. Q4Do you carry parts for my brand, or will the part be ordered for a second visit?
  5. Q5For a gas range or gas dryer: what is your TSSA registration number?

Before the visit

  • Street address or postal code, and the nearest main road.
  • For a stacked townhome or condo: unit number, entry code and where a service van can park.
  • Brand, model and serial number. A photo of the plate is enough.
  • Any error code on the display, and what the appliance does just before the fault.
  • A clear path to the unit, including stairs to a basement or upper-floor laundry.

Kanata on the map, for a repair visit

Kanata sits about 22 km west of downtown Ottawa along Highway 417. For a repair company based in the central or east end, a Kanata call means a drive out the 417, so the street and the nearest main road help it plan the route and the day.

Write the main road closest to you: March Road, Terry Fox Drive, Campeau Drive, Hazeldean Road, Eagleson Road, or Castlefrank Road and Kanata Avenue. Add your postal code if you know it. With that, the company knows on the first call whether you are inside its regular area.

Older streets and newer ones

Kanata began as a planned community in the 1960s, built by developer Bill Teron with a mix of housing densities. It became a city in 1978 and joined Ottawa in 2001. Beaverbrook and Glen Cairn are its oldest neighbourhoods. Kanata Town Centre, north of the 417, has townhomes and stacked townhomes.

For a repair visit, the type of home matters more than its age. Tell the company:

  • Where the appliance is. Basement laundry, a laundry closet upstairs, a stacked washer and dryer, a built-in wall oven.
  • How to get in. Unit number, entry code, and which door the technician should use.
  • Where to park. If visitor parking for your townhome row or building is a walk from the door, say where it is.

When nobody is home during the day

Write in the work order the times you can be home, or who will let the technician in. Choose Today, This week or Flexible on the form. The company confirms the slot on the call. If a part has to be ordered, the repair is booked for a second visit, so ask for both times on the same call.

The appliance pages

Each appliance page lists what the technician does on the visit, where the model plate is, and when replacing makes more sense than repairing:

Gas appliances in Kanata homes

If your range or dryer runs on gas, mark it in the work order. Ontario’s gas regulation, O. Reg. 212/01, allows only a person who holds a certificate for that work to repair or service a gas appliance. Ask the company for its TSSA registration number and check it with the contractor lookup on tssa.org.

If you smell gas, leave the home and call 911 or Enbridge Gas from outside.

Questions

01Do you send technicians to all of Kanata?

We pass your work order to one local repair company that covers your street. Write your postal code, or the nearest main road such as March Road or Hazeldean Road.

02Does a Kanata address cost more?

Ottawa firms that publish a visit fee charge about $80–90 + tax, usually waived if you go ahead with the repair. Whether a firm adds anything for distance is its own policy, so ask on the call.

03Can the visit be early or late in the day?

Write the times you can be home in the work order. The company tells you on the call which slots it has.

04My dryer and range are gas. Does that change anything?

Yes. In Ontario, gas appliance repair needs a person who holds a TSSA gas certificate. Mark the appliance as gas, ask for the TSSA registration number on the call, and check it with the contractor lookup on tssa.org.

05How many companies get my details?

One. If that company cannot take the job, we ask you before passing it to another.
