What one washer repair costs
B&M Canada Appliances, an Ottawa firm, prints typical totals in the table above and says most washer repairs fall between $150 and $400, parts and labour together, with bearing and transmission jobs higher. Capital Appliance Repair prints $100 to $400 for most washer repairs and puts the low end at a lid switch or a clogged drain filter, with motor, control board or pump replacements on high-end brands higher. Express Appliance Repair Ottawa lists labour by job, such as $199–$249 for a drain pump, inlet valve, door boot or control board and $199–$299 for a tub bearing, dated 19.05.2026. The three lists use different bases. Use them as a map of the market.
The visit fee
The visit covers travel and a diagnosis. At B&M a residential washer call is $89 + tax and the technician runs fill, wash, drain and spin, reads any code and checks the filter, the hoses and the lock. It then gives a written quote and the $89 comes off the repair if you approve it. After 9 PM and before 7 AM that firm adds $100 flat, and homes more than 30 km from downtown Ottawa may see a travel charge. Other firms we read credit or waive their fees in the same way.
What moves the price
The failed part decides most of it. A belt or a switch is a short job, and a tub bearing needs major disassembly. Design counts too. On B&M’s page, high-efficiency front-loaders carry pricier seals, boards and bearings than a plain top-loader. Brand and model affect parts cost. Stacked pairs and towers common in condos and townhouses can need to be separated, which adds labour, according to B&M. Reading a quote
Ontario’s business guide on consumer protection caps a bill at 10% over a contract estimate unless the customer agrees in writing to more. It is written for consumer contracts at large, and a washer repair quote is one. Have the fault, part, labour, tax, warranty and the fate of the visit fee put on paper. One firm’s repairs carry a 3-month warranty, another says up to one year. Compare those terms between quotes as well.
Repair or replace
Both firms draw the line near half. A washer still short of its eighth to tenth year, with a bill under half the cost of a comparable new machine, is a repair. A new installed washer costs $700 to $1,800 or more on Capital’s page. On that range, a $200 pump on a $1,200 washer is easy maths, while a $500 bearing on an old machine is a harder call. Weigh in the warranty: LG Canada and Samsung Canada list motor coverage of ten years on some washers. See repair or replace and warranties and recalls.
Where this fits
For all appliances see appliance repair cost in Ottawa. The washer repair page explains the visit itself.
Whose quote you get
The tables come from three firms’ pages. The washer request itself reaches one independent repair company covering your area, which may price above, inside or below them after seeing the machine. Ottawa Appliance Desk passes requests along and keeps out of the pricing.
Questions to ask the company
- Is the price for the part and labour together, with tax shown?
- Does the visit fee come off the repair?
- Which part do you think failed, and how sure are you before you open the machine?
- If the part is on order, is the second visit charged?
- Will you give me the written quote and the code or test result that led to it?
Have this ready for the call
- Brand, model, serial number and age of the washer.
- Which design: front-load, top-load, or a stacked laundry tower.
- The code shown, and whether it quits at fill, wash, drain or spin.
- A current price for a comparable new washer, with delivery.
- The purchase receipt, in case a warranty applies.
Questions people ask
What is the cheapest washer repair in Ottawa?
Express Appliance Repair lists $99 to $199 labour for a lid switch, door lock, drive belt, drain hose, coin trap or filter job. B&M lists a drive belt from $130. The cheapest repairs are small parts that need little time to reach. The technician finds which one it is on the visit.
How much is a tub bearing replacement?
B&M lists tub bearing or transmission jobs at about $350 to $600. Express lists $199 to $299 in its labour column for the bearing. The lists count different things, so ask the company whether the quote includes the part, the tub work and tax.
Two washer quotes are far apart. How do I compare them?
Firms count the visit fee, the part type and the labour differently. One firm says original parts cost 15% to 35% more than aftermarket parts. Set the two quotes side by side and compare part, labour, tax, visit fee and warranty one line at a time; the totals alone hide the difference.
Does the visit fee come off the repair?
At B&M the $89 + tax is applied toward an approved repair. Doctor Appliance waives its fee with a repair, and Capital Appliance Repair deducts the fee from the bill. If you decline, the fee stays. Ask the company that calls you.
What happens to the old washer if I replace it?
The City of Ottawa says it does not pick up appliances such as stoves, fridges, dryers and dishwashers at the curb and residents arrange their own removal. Ask the store that delivers a new washer whether it takes the old one away.
When is a new washer the better buy?
B&M suggests repairing a washer younger than eight to ten whose repair comes in under roughly half of a comparable new one. A bearing or transmission on an older machine with other wear points to a new one.
