One name, several product lines
GE sells under more than one name. The standard GE line is the main range. GE Profile is the mid-tier line, Café the customizable series, Monogram the built-in line, and Hotpoint and Haier the value brands. One Ottawa firm repairs the whole family and says GE is one of the most common brands in Ottawa kitchens and laundry rooms.
GE Appliances has belonged to Haier since June 2016. A repair firm notes that Haier-branded units now share many components with GE models. For you this means one thing: the full model number tells the company which parts apply.
Find the model number before the call
The tag sits in a different place on each appliance. On a GE side-by-side fridge, GE lists spots in the fresh-food compartment: the floor, behind the crisper drawers, an inside wall or the ceiling. The Ottawa firm adds that a dishwasher tag is on the tub frame or inner door, a dryer’s on the door frame, and a range’s behind the storage drawer or on the oven frame. A photo of the tag in the request saves a call back.
Common GE faults by appliance
The firm’s list is a good map of what companies see most:
- Fridge: warm fridge with a cold freezer, from the defrost system or the evaporator fan. Ice makers that stop, from the inlet valve or the module.
- Washer: will not drain, from the drain pump or the lid switch.
- Dryer: no heat, from the cycling thermostat or the thermal fuse.
- Oven: will not heat, from the bake element or the control board.
- Dishwasher: drain faults and low-fill codes.
Treat the list as a pattern. The technician tests the part before the quote. The related pages cover fridge repair, ice maker repair, washer repair, dryer repair and oven and stove repair.
What it costs
The Ottawa firm puts typical completed GE repairs at $180 to $480 with parts and labour and says control-board work can run higher. Its visit fee is $89 + tax, credited if you go ahead, and $129 + tax for gas appliances. A sealed-system fault on a fridge starts with a $159 + tax diagnostic. Those are one firm’s figures, read 29.10.2026. See fridge repair cost for the wider ranges.
Gas ranges and dryers
A gas GE range or dryer adds a gas fitting and a valve to the repair. That work is for a technician qualified for gas, and the company that calls you can say whether it takes it. A gas smell comes before any repair: leave the house and phone Enbridge Gas from outside. For the dryer side see gas dryer repair.
Repair, replace and the maker’s warranty
An appliance that is new enough may still be covered by the maker or the retailer. Have the purchase date and the receipt to hand when the company calls. If the appliance is older, repair or replace walks through the half-the-price rule, and warranties and recalls explains how to check coverage in Ontario.
An independent company, separate from GE
The request goes to one Ottawa repair company that covers your area and takes GE family work. Ask on the call whether it is also authorized for GE warranty work. The Desk has no tie to GE Appliances or Haier and only forwards the request. Ask the company to put the GE part number on the quote, so you can check it against the tag.
Questions to ask the company
- Do you work on my GE line: standard GE, Profile, Café or Monogram?
- Does your GE diagnosis fee cover testing more than one fault, and is it credited?
- Do you carry the common GE parts for my model, or will the part be ordered?
- If my GE appliance is gas, can your technician work on gas appliances?
- Will the invoice show the GE part number and the warranty term on it?
Have this ready for the call
- Model and serial number. Take a photo of the tag; its place depends on the appliance.
- The appliance and its style: French door, side-by-side, top-load, front-load, slide-in range.
- Any code or message on the display, written down or photographed.
- The purchase date and the retailer, in case the maker still covers the appliance.
- Clear access to the appliance, and the gas shut-off if it is a gas range or dryer.
Questions people ask
How do I read the GE model number?
One Ottawa firm says the letters at the start usually show the line: Profile models typically begin with P, Café with C and Monogram with Z. The full number matters more than the line, because parts are matched to it. Send a photo of the tag in the request.
Where is the model tag on a GE fridge?
On GE side-by-side fridges, GE lists several spots in the fresh-food compartment: the floor, behind the crisper drawers, a side wall near the drawers or the top, or the ceiling. Some newer tags carry a QR code that opens the product page when scanned.
Are Hotpoint and Haier appliances the same as GE?
They share a family. GE Appliances is owned by Haier, which bought it in 2016, and a repair firm notes that Haier-branded units share many parts with GE models. The firm lists Hotpoint and Haier alongside GE, Profile, Café and Monogram. Give the exact brand on the tag.
What do GE oven codes such as F2 or F7 mean?
One Ottawa firm’s quick reference reads F2 and F3 as a temperature sensor or wiring fault and F7 as a stuck keypad or failed control membrane. It adds that codes are a starting point and vary by model and year. Write the code down and give it in the request.
Do the same faults hit every GE appliance?
Each appliance has its own pattern. The firm lists a warm fridge with a cold freezer as a defrost or fan fault, a washer that will not drain as a pump or lid switch, a dryer without heat as a thermostat or fuse, and an oven that will not heat as an element or control board. The technician confirms the part.
