In short
- Manufacturers list the same short chain of causes: lid switch, load, hose, standpipe, pump filter, then the pump.
- A drain pump replacement is printed at roughly $150–$350 by one Ottawa firm, a lid switch or door lock at $150–$280.
- When the water stays in the house drain, a plumber is the right trade. GE and LG both say so.
- Water in the drum can be hot. Unplug the washer before anyone reaches in.

What the symptom usually means
Water left in the drum after the cycle ends is the symptom. The causes come in a short chain, and the manufacturers list them in nearly the same order. Whirlpool’s guide runs: lid or door not closed, an unbalanced or overloaded load, a slow spin setting, too much detergent, a kinked or clogged drain hose, a standpipe outside the allowed height, and a clogged pump filter on some front-load models. GE adds the pump itself, which hums when it tries and fails. LG adds a frozen hose and a clogged house drain.
The visit exists to tell them apart.
The order a technician works in
The usual sequence, cheapest checks first:
- The lid or door switch. Whirlpool explains that the switch lets the washer run only when the lid is securely closed. A switch that fails stops the pump-out. One Ottawa firm prints $150 to $280 for a lid switch or door lock.
- Load and detergent. An unbalanced load or heavy suds can stop pumping and spinning.
- Drain hose and standpipe. Whirlpool gives the standpipe limits as at least 30 inches (76.2 cm) and no more than 96 inches (244 cm), and warns that a taller pipe lets water flow back. GE says most of its full-size washers pump up to 8 feet.
- The pump filter. Dirt, lint and small items from pockets collect here on front-loaders. Where it sits and how it opens depends on the model.
- The pump. If the filter and hose are clear and the pump hums without moving water, the pump or its impeller is the usual part. The same Ottawa firm prints $150 to $350 for a drain pump.
The technician also looks at the house side. GE recommends a plumber when water will not run down the standpipe.
Why you leave the opening of the machine to the technician
The water in the drum or the filter housing can be hot, LG warns. The washer is a mains-powered appliance with a pump and a door lock. A technician unplugs it, drains the residual water into a pan and works on a machine that cannot start. Leave the washer closed, unplug it, put towels in front of the door and send the request.
What drives the price
The part is the first driver. The same Ottawa firm lists a drain pump at $150 to $350 and a tub bearing or transmission at $350 to $600. These are ranges for parts and labour together. A second firm prints $100 to $400 for most washer repairs in Ottawa and $700 to $1,800 or more for a new washer installed. Both firms’ ranges were read on 29.10.2026.
Brand and model are the second driver, because the part differs. The third is access: a stacked washer or one in a closet takes longer to pull out. The fourth is the visit fee: the first firm charges $89 plus tax and applies it to an approved repair. Its range is for the Ottawa–Gatineau area.

When a plumber is the right call
If the washer pumps normally and the water backs up in the standpipe or the floor drain, the blockage is in the house drain. LG and GE both place that outside the washer. A plumber clears it, and the washer technician will stop at the point where the fault is no longer the machine. Tell us in the request if a sink, a tub or a floor drain also runs slow.
Ottawa conditions
Laundry sits in a basement, in a closet on the main floor, or in a garage or cottage that goes cold. The cold part matters, because LG names a frozen pump or hose among the drain causes.
Washer or plumber: who you hear from
A drain request goes to one independent washer repair company covering your area. If its technician finds the blockage past the standpipe, the job passes to a plumber; ask on the call what the visit costs in that case. Ask it to write the pump part and the waiting time on the quote. More: washer repair and front-load washer.
Questions to ask the company
- Is the fault the pump, the lid or door lock, or the house drain, and how will you tell?
- Does the quote include the pump and its labour on separate lines, with tax?
- If the washer drains fine on your visit, what do you charge and what do you advise?
- How long is the warranty on the part and on your labour?
- Should a plumber look at the drain before or after you do?
Have this ready for the call
- Brand, model, front-load or top-load, and the error code on the display
- When it stops: during the wash, after the wash or at the spin
- Where the washer drains: a standpipe in the wall, a laundry tub or a floor drain
- Whether the laundry space is cold, such as a garage or an unheated basement corner
Questions people ask
The washer drains on some cycles and not others. Why?
Whirlpool notes that gentle, delicate and hand-wash cycles use slow spins and leave more water in the load, so a heavy-duty cycle can look different. If the tub still holds water after a high-spin cycle ends, tell the company which cycles you tried.
Could my house drain be the problem?
It can be. LG files a clogged standpipe or floor drain under plumbing, outside the washer, and GE advises a plumber when water will not run down the standpipe. A slow sink or floor drain nearby is a clue worth adding to the request.
Can cold weather stop a washer draining?
LG lists water freezing in the pump or hose among the causes in cold weather. In Ottawa that matters for washers in garages, cottages and unheated basement corners. Mention where the washer sits and how cold that space gets.
What does a drain error code on the display mean?
LG’s help page for front-loaders titles the drain fault with its OE error code. Codes differ by brand and model. Write the code down or photograph it, and give it to the company on the call.
The washer paused with water in the drum. Is it stuck?
GE says a pause of up to 3 minutes between cycle stages can be normal, and that advancing a manual dial during a pause can skip the pump-out. If the water is still there well after the cycle ends, book the visit and note how long you waited.
