What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Is my part of Orléans inside your regular service area?
  2. Q2What is your visit fee, and is it credited if I go ahead with the repair?
  3. Q3Can the call or the visit be in French?
  4. Q4Will I get the quote, parts and labour, before you start?
  5. Q5For a gas range or gas dryer: what is your TSSA registration number?

Before the visit

  • Street address or postal code, and the nearest main road.
  • Brand, model and serial number. A photo of the plate is enough.
  • Rough age of the appliance, and the receipt if it may still be under warranty.
  • Where the appliance is: kitchen, basement laundry, upstairs laundry closet, garage.
  • Shut-off valves behind the washer or under the sink within reach.

Orléans on the map, for a repair visit

Orléans runs along the Ottawa River in the city’s east end, about 16 km from downtown. Highway 174 runs along its north edge, St. Joseph Boulevard is the old main street, and Innes Road crosses the south. For a repair company coming from downtown, the 174 is the direct route.

Write the main road closest to you, and your postal code if you know it. With that, the company knows on the first call whether you are inside its regular area and can plan the day around the drive.

Houses, rows and condos

By the 2021 Census figures quoted on Wikipedia, more than half of the homes in Orléans are single-detached houses, about 30% are row houses and townhomes, and about 9% are apartments and condos. About 85% of households own their home.

That shapes the visit:

  • In a house or a row townhome, say whether the laundry is in the basement or an upstairs closet, and clear the stairs and the path.
  • In a condo, write the unit number, the entry code and where a service van can park.
  • As the owner, you make the call on repair or replace. The technician’s quote comes before any work, so you can compare it with a new unit first.

Suburban building in Orléans started in the late 1960s with Queenswood Heights. Chapel Hill and Fallingbrook were built in the 1980s and 1990s. Whatever the street, a photo of the model plate in the work order lets the technician look up the model and its parts before the visit.

In French or English

Orléans is one of Ottawa’s main bilingual communities. About a third of residents give French as their mother tongue. If you want the call in French, say so in the work order, and ask the company on the call whether a French-speaking technician can come.

The appliance pages

For the typical lifespan to weigh against the quote, and what the technician looks at, open the page for your appliance:

  • Washers: drum full of water, stops mid-cycle, bangs on spin.
  • Dryers: cold loads, two cycles to dry, dead on start.
  • Fridges: warm fresh-food section, ice on the freezer wall, water on the floor.
  • Dishwashers: standing water, gritty dishes, a leak at the door.
  • Ovens and stoves: no bake heat, a dead burner, a cracked glass top.

Gas ranges and dryers

Mark a gas range or gas dryer as gas in the work order. Ontario allows only a holder of a TSSA gas certificate to repair or service it (O. Reg. 212/01, s. 6), so get the company’s TSSA registration number on the call and look it up on tssa.org. Smell gas? Leave the home, then call 911 or Enbridge Gas from outside.

Questions

01Do you send technicians to all of Orléans?

We pass it to one repair company that covers the east end. Give your postal code, or the nearest main road such as St. Joseph Boulevard or Innes Road. If your street falls outside every company we work with, we tell you.

02Can I have the call in French?

Write it in the work order. We pass the request as you wrote it, and the company tells you on the call whether a French-speaking technician can come.

03Is my appliance worth repairing?

Compare the quote with the price of a comparable new appliance today. Consumer Reports suggests replacing when the repair would cost more than half of that. The appliance pages on this site give typical lifespans.

04What does the visit cost?

Ottawa firms that publish a fee charge about $80–90 + tax for the visit and diagnosis, and most waive it if you go ahead with the repair. Ask on the call whether anything is added for distance.

05How many companies get my details?

One. If that company cannot take the job, we ask you before passing it to another.
