Stittsville on the map, for a repair visit

Stittsville lies about 20 km west of downtown Ottawa, right next to Kanata and Richmond. It is the far end of the western urban area, and the old village sat where Carp Road meets Hazeldean Road. Wikipedia dates it to 1854, with the first post office, and notes the township behind it, Goulbourn, was set up in 1818 for Irish soldiers after the War of 1812. Most of the village burned in 1870, and the railway was rebuilt through it.

The rail line closed in 1990 and became part of the Trans Canada Trail. Stittsville joined Ottawa in 2001, and the ward counted 40,889 residents in 2021.

Write the main road nearest you: Hazeldean Road, Carp Road or Stittsville Main Street. Add the neighbourhood. Wikipedia lists names such as Old Stittsville, Poole Creek Village, Jackson Trails, Fairwinds, Deer Run, Timbermere and West Ridge Estates. A road plus a neighbourhood name lets the firm place you on its map during the first call.

Newer and older kitchens

A newer range may still be under warranty, so read warranties and recalls first. An older freestanding range may have been moved and reconnected more than once.

The outlet behind the range

The Electrical Safety Authority’s Bulletin 26-14-9, issued May 2025, explains an Ontario amendment: dwelling units get a 14-50R range receptacle, because electric ranges are common and wiring errors happen when hard-wired ranges are removed and reconnected. Built-in cooktops and ovens that are hard-wired are an exception. Where a gas supply is installed in the stove space, the code also asks for a duplex receptacle, protected by an arc-fault breaker.

That bulletin is about installation. It tells you why a technician asks if the range is plugged in or hard-wired and where the gas line comes into the room. Describe both in the request.

Gas, and the rule that comes with it

For a gas range, Ontario Regulation 212/01 keeps installation, alteration, purging, activation, repair, service and removal in the hands of certificate holders. A gas oven that stays cold with the burners working is a gas job, and it belongs to a certificate holder. One Ottawa firm says its gas range work is done by staff with TSSA certification and charges $129 + tax for the gas diagnostic, against $89 + tax for electric.

If you smell gas when lighting the oven, leave first and call Enbridge Gas from outside; the repair waits until the gas company clears the home.

What drives the bill

On one Ottawa firm’s page, most electric stove repairs fall between $100 and $450. An element or an infinite switch sits at the low end, and a control board higher. The same page puts a new electric range at $800 to $2,500 or more installed, and calls repair almost always the better choice for a range younger than ten. The part-by-part table is on oven repair cost.

Where to go next

The main write-up is oven and stove repair. A glass-top or gas burner problem has a page of its own: cooktop repair. Neighbours have pages as well: Kanata and Barrhaven.

The company that comes to Stittsville

A single independent repair company that drives the far west end gets your range request. It phones, sets a time and writes the quote before touching the oven. Should it be unable to take the job, you hear from us first, and only with your yes does the request move to another firm.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Is my Stittsville street inside your regular area, and is there a travel charge to my address?
  2. Is my range gas or electric for pricing, and what is your TSSA registration number for gas work?
  3. Does the quote cover parts and labour, and do I approve it before you start?
  4. If the part is on order, when is the second visit?
  5. What warranty comes with the repair?

Have this ready for the call

  • Gas, electric or dual fuel, and whether it is a freestanding range, a wall oven or a cooktop
  • Brand, model and serial number from the sticker, usually inside the oven door frame, as a photo
  • What happens: oven stays cold, burner clicks and does not light, door lock stuck after self-clean, error code
  • A cleared kitchen floor and a free metre in front of the range
  • Whether the range was moved or reconnected recently, for example after a renovation

Questions people ask

Why would a new Stittsville home have a heavy outlet behind the stove space?

Ontario’s amendment to Rule 26-744 asks for a 14-50R electric range receptacle in dwelling units, so a later owner can plug in an electric range. A gas range also gets a duplex receptacle in the stove space. Hard-wired built-in ovens and cooktops are an exception.

Who may reconnect a gas range after my kitchen renovation?

Section 6(1) of O. Reg. 212/01 bars anyone without the right certificate from installing, altering, repairing or servicing a gas appliance. Get the TSSA registration number from the company and run it through the TSSA contractor search.

Is my wall oven repair priced the same as a freestanding range?

One Ottawa firm covers ranges, wall ovens and cooktops under one diagnostic fee, with gas priced higher at $129 + tax. Say in the request whether the oven sits in the wall or stands free, and read what the quote covers before you approve it.

My Stittsville home sits well outside the centre. Is there a travel charge?

B&M Canada Appliances notes a possible travel charge past 30 km from downtown. At about 20 km, the village is inside that line. Ask the company that calls about its own policy, since each firm sets it.
