How a request works

You send one form: the appliance, what it does, your area and the hours you are home. We pass it to one independent repair company that covers your part of Ottawa. That company calls you, books the visit, finds the fault and quotes the repair. Each appliance has its own page, such as washer repair and fridge repair.

Fees and quotes

Ottawa firms print visit fees between $60 and $95 + tax today, and some take the fee off the repair when you approve it. Repair prices come after the technician tests the unit. The appliance repair cost guide sets the published figures side by side, and repair or replace covers the older unit.

Gas, warranty and recalls

Gas work in Ontario belongs to a TSSA-registered contractor, and a gas smell means leaving the home first. The page on warranties and recalls explains how to check a model and what a repair warranty should list.

Pick your area

The same service covers the whole City. Local notes on housing, distances and winter access for Kanata, Orléans and Barrhaven are on their own pages, and Nepean and Stittsville follow the same pattern.

Questions to ask the company

  1. What is the visit fee, and does it come off the repair bill?
  2. Is the quote written, and does it list parts and labour apart?
  3. How many days or months is the repair covered, and is labour inside that cover?
  4. What happens to the fee if the part is back-ordered and you come twice?
  5. For gas appliances, what is your TSSA registration number?

Have this ready for the call

  • The brand, model and serial number from the plate inside the door or on the back
  • A short video or photo of the fault, and any code on the display
  • The purchase date and receipt, in case a warranty applies
  • Gas or electric, and the floor the appliance is on
  • Two or three time windows when an adult can be home

Questions people ask

Do you repair the appliance yourselves?

The Desk itself does no repairs. Your form goes to one independent local repair company, which calls, books, diagnoses, quotes and does the work, and which alone decides its fee, its quote and its warranty.

Does it cost anything to send a request?

The form is free to send. Charges start with the repair company, which names its visit fee when it calls. Ottawa firms publish visit fees of $60 to $95 + tax, and some credit the fee toward a repair you approve.

How soon will someone call?

The timing belongs to the company that takes your request, and we promise no window. Name your area and the hours you can be home in the form, and say if food is thawing in a fridge or freezer. Ask the company for its first free appointment.

Why do firms quote the repair only after the visit?

Two faults can look the same from outside. A washer that will not spin can need a belt, a motor or a control board, at very different prices, so the technician runs the unit and tests the part first. Approve nothing until you have read the written quote.

Do I pay twice if the part has to be ordered?

Ask before you agree. Firms that credit the visit fee apply it to the approved repair, so the second trip to fit the part usually sits inside that repair. Get that in writing with the part price, the expected date and whether a deposit is due.

How long is the warranty on a repair?

It varies by company: 90 days at one Ottawa firm, 3 months at another and up to 1 year on parts and labour at a third. A warranty that covers only the part leaves labour to you, so ask for the terms on paper with the quote.

Can the technician work on my gas stove or dryer?

Only a TSSA-registered fuels contractor may work on gas appliances in Ontario, and TSSA runs a public Find a Registered Fuels Contractor lookup. Ask the company for its registration number on the call and check it.

I smell gas. Should I send a request?

Leave the home first. Enbridge Gas says to leave the area and call 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from a safe place, with switches, phones and appliances inside left alone. Send the request once the gas utility has cleared the home.

My appliance is still under warranty. Who do I call?

Start with the maker or the store that sold it, because a manufacturer warranty usually names the service providers it accepts. Read the terms before anyone else opens the unit. Once the warranty has run out, send us the request.

Is a request the same as an appointment?

They differ. A request tells the company what is wrong and where you are. The visit is booked when the company calls and you agree a time window. B&M Canada Appliances says the same on its own site.

Can I cancel after I have sent the request?

Yes. Tell the company that calls you as early as you can, by phone. One Ottawa firm asks for at least 3 hours’ notice and charges $79 + tax for a late cancellation, so ask for the company’s terms when you book.

Does a farm or rural address cost more?

It can. B&M Canada Appliances notes that travel charges may apply more than 30 km from downtown, and rural addresses on the edge of the City can sit past that. Give your full address and ask for the travel amount before the company drives out.

What do you do with my personal details?

We use them to pass your request to one repair company, keep them for this request only and add nobody to mailing lists. The privacy page lists what the form collects, who receives it, how long it is kept and how to ask for deletion.

What if I am unhappy with the repair?

Return to the company first, with the written quote and the warranty terms. If that fails, Consumer Protection Ontario explains your rights and how to file a complaint. Tell us too, and keep photos of the fault and the invoice.

Tell us the job. A local company calls you back.

Ottawa Appliance Desk is an independent request service. Jobs are done by independent local companies we pass your request to.
