What to ask before you book
- Q1What is your visit fee, and is it credited if I go ahead with the repair?
- Q2Do you work on my brand and style: top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French door or side-by-side?
- Q3If the fault is in the sealed system, do you do that work yourselves?
- Q4Will I get the quote, parts and labour, before you start?
- Q5What warranty comes with the repair, on the part and on the labour?
Before the visit
- Brand, model and serial number. The plate is usually inside the fresh-food section, high on a side wall.
- Style of fridge, and whether it has a water line, dispenser or ice maker.
- What changed and when: warm fridge, warm freezer, ice build-up, water under the drawers or on the floor.
- Room to pull the fridge out from the wall, and a clear path for a dolly.
- A cooler or a second fridge for the food while the unit is open.
Common fridge faults
Fridge faults usually look like one of these:
- The fridge section is warm while the freezer stays cold.
- Temperatures go up and down through the day.
- Ice builds up on the freezer’s back wall or around the drawers.
- Water under the crisper drawers or on the floor.
- The ice maker or dispenser has stopped.
- The fridge runs all the time, clicks or hums louder than before.
Write which one fits, when it started, and whether there was a power outage just before.
What the technician does on the visit
The technician checks temperatures in both sections, listens to the compressor and the fans, and looks at the defrost system and the controls. Ice on the back wall of the freezer usually sends the technician to the defrost parts. Water on the floor usually sends them to the drain, the water line or the ice maker. A fridge that runs and never cools may have a fault in the sealed system, the part with the compressor and refrigerant. Ask on the call whether the company does sealed-system work.
You get a quote, labour and parts, before work starts. If the fridge is not worth fixing, the technician tells you, and the visit fee usually stays.
Repair or replace
A US study of home components (NAHB, 2007) puts a standard fridge’s typical life at about 13 years and a compact one at about 9. Consumer Reports suggests replacing when the repair would cost more than half the price of a comparable new unit.
Running cost counts too. Natural Resources Canada says an old fridge uses about 35% more energy on average than an ENERGY STAR model, and points to the EnerGuide label for the yearly kWh figure. When you replace, NRCan suggests recycling the old fridge over moving it to the garage or the cottage.
Where the model plate is
The plate is usually inside the fresh-food section, high on a side wall. On Whirlpool-group fridges it sits on the left wall for top-freezer, bottom-freezer and French door models and on the right for side-by-side. Frigidaire puts it on the upper right side wall for French door and side-by-side models. Take a photo and add the model to the work order.
Before the technician arrives
Clear the floor in front of the fridge and the path to it, and clear the space beside it so it can roll out. Empty the shelves you can, or have a cooler ready. If there is a water line, show the technician where the shut-off valve is.
Questions
01The freezer is cold and the fridge is warm. What is it?
Usually the airflow between the two sections: blocked vents, a fan or the defrost system. The technician finds which one on the visit.
02Can a fridge in an unheated garage stop working in winter?
Whirlpool says its fridges need a room between 13 and 43 °C. An Ottawa garage in January is well below that, so a garage fridge can stop cooling properly. Mention in the work order that the fridge stands in a garage.
03Is it worth fixing an old fridge?
Compare the quote with the price of a comparable new fridge today. Consumer Reports suggests replacing when the repair would cost more than half of that. Natural Resources Canada says an old fridge uses about 35% more energy on average than an ENERGY STAR model.
04What does the visit cost?
Ottawa firms that publish a fee charge about $80–90 + tax for the visit and diagnosis, and most waive it if you go ahead with the repair. The company confirms its own fee on the call.
05Who gets my details?
