Four kinds of cooktop, four failure points

A cooktop sits in the counter on its own, often above a drawer or a separate wall oven. A range joins burners and oven in one box; for that, see oven and stove repair. The top itself fails in different places depending on its type:

  • Gas. An igniter, a spark module, a clogged or wet burner port, or a valve.
  • Coil. The element, its receptacle or the infinite switch behind the knob.
  • Glass-top (radiant). A surface element, its temperature limiter or the switch.
  • Induction. The power board, a coil or the cooling fan, and sometimes the touch panel.

Most cooktop faults come down to one part. The request should say which burner or zone fails, since that points the technician to a single circuit.

Gas cooktops: clicking, weak flames and the law

Clicking with no flame, yellow flames and a burner that will not simmer are the usual gas complaints. They point to the igniter, the spark module, the burner parts or a valve. Ontario’s gas regulation, O. Reg. 212/01 at s. 6(1), reserves repair, service, alteration and removal of a gas cooktop for certificate holders. The company’s TSSA registration number is the thing to write down when it calls.

Gas smell: get out, call Enbridge Gas on 1-866-763-5427 from outside, and send the request once the line is safe.

Glass-top and induction

Radiant elements sit under the ceramic glass, so the technician lifts the top to reach them, and touch controls add a board. A cracked glass top is a separate and larger part. The firm’s list gives $250–$700, set by brand and size. Induction tops fail at the power board, a coil or the fan. Capital Appliance Repair says new induction cooktops start at $1,200 and go well above $2,000, which widens the case for repair.

What sets the price

The part comes first: a coil element or switch costs far less than a spark module, and a control board sits at the top. Labour comes next. A cooktop dropped into a counter takes longer than a freestanding coil range. Brand and model complete the picture, since parts for premium makes sometimes have to be ordered. The visit fee is separate. On B&M’s list it is applied to the repair when you approve it.

When to stop using the cooktop

Leave the cooktop off if a burner stays on with the knob turned off, if you see sparks or scorch marks or smell burning plastic at the back, if a gas flame is large and yellow, or if the glass is cracked. Switch off the breaker for an electric top and describe what you saw in the request. The company decides what the technician brings.

Repair or replace

Gas igniter and switch repairs are small against the price of a new top. The borderline case is an older glass-top with broken glass. Ask the company for the part price before the visit ends, then compare it with a comparable new cooktop, installed. The half-price rule is on the repair or replace page, and the full price table is on oven repair cost. A hood above the cooktop is covered on microwave and range hood repair.

The cooktop technician you get

One independent Ottawa repair company, picked by your area, that takes cooktop work. Gas, induction or glass, it tells you on the phone what it can handle and what it charges to look. You agree before anything is booked. The Desk forwards the request and stays out of the price.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Do you work on built-in cooktops, and on my brand?
  2. Do I pay the diagnosis on top of the cooktop repair, or is it folded in?
  3. For gas: what is your TSSA registration number?
  4. If the glass is cracked, will you tell me the price of the glass before ordering it?
  5. If the part has to be ordered, what do you charge for the second visit?

Have this ready for the call

  • Brand, model and serial number from the rating plate. On a built-in cooktop it is often under the unit, so ask what the company needs.
  • Gas, coil, glass-top or induction, and which burners or zones fail
  • Any code or blinking light on the touch panel, photographed
  • The cabinet under the cooktop emptied, with a clear path to it
  • A photo of any crack, scorch mark or discoloured burner

Questions people ask

Gas burner clicks but never lights. Is that dangerous?

The spark is harmless, but a burner that clicks with the knob open and does not catch may release unburned gas. Turn the knob off and let the room air out. A real gas smell means everyone out, with the call to Enbridge or 911 made from the street. Igniter and spark module faults are gas work.

Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?

A crack in glass-ceramic cannot be patched, and a cracked top should stay off until the glass is replaced. One Ottawa firm puts replacement glass at $250–$700 depending on brand and size. On an older unit the glass can cost more than the cooktop is worth.

My induction cooktop says there is no pan. What does that mean?

Induction needs cookware with a magnetic base, so a pan that does not suit it can trigger the message. If the pan is suitable, a failed coil or sensor is the next suspect. The technician tests with a known pan first, then the coil, power board and cooling fan.

One burner on my coil top stays hot on every setting. Why?

A burner that glows at every setting and ignores the knob points to a failed infinite switch or a burnt receptacle. Switch off the breaker and send the request. A burner stuck on is a fire risk, so it should stay off until the technician has tested the part. Photograph the burner before you switch the breaker back on.

Is a built-in cooktop harder to repair than a range?

The parts match a range’s top, but access differs. The technician works from the cabinet below or lifts the unit from the counter, which adds labour. Mention in the request that it is a built-in and give the brand so the company can plan the visit.
