What to ask before you book

  1. Q1What is your visit fee, and is it credited if I go ahead with the repair?
  2. Q2For a gas range: what is your TSSA registration number?
  3. Q3Do you work on my brand, and on built-in wall ovens and cooktops as well as ranges?
  4. Q4Will I get the quote, parts and labour, before you start?
  5. Q5What warranty comes with the repair, on the part and on the labour?

Before the visit

  • Brand, model and serial number. On most ranges the plate is on the oven frame with the door open, or on the frame behind the storage drawer.
  • Gas or electric, and whether it is a range, a wall oven or a separate cooktop.
  • What fails: bake, broil, one burner, all burners, the display or the controls.
  • Any error code on the display, written down or photographed.
  • Room in front of the range, and the storage drawer emptied.

Common oven and stove faults

Range faults usually look like one of these:

  • The oven will not heat, or takes far longer to reach temperature.
  • Baking comes out uneven: burnt underneath, raw on top.
  • A burner will not light or will not heat.
  • A cracked glass cooktop.
  • A control panel or display that does not respond.

Write which one fits, whether the range is gas or electric, and whether bake, broil or both have stopped.

Gas ranges: what Ontario law says

O. Reg. 212/01 under the Technical Standards and Safety Act says no person may install, repair, service or remove a gas appliance unless they hold a certificate for that work. Registered contractors must show their registration and mark their field vehicles with their name and registration number.

Ask for the TSSA registration number when the company calls, and check it with the contractor lookup on tssa.org.

If you smell gas, leave the home right away. Leave switches and appliances as they are and call 911 or the Enbridge Gas emergency line, 1-866-763-5427, from outside.

What the technician does on the visit

The technician runs bake, broil and the burners, reads any error code and tests the part that fails. On an electric oven that is the bake or broil element, the sensor and the controls. On a gas oven, the igniter is a common suspect: an igniter that glows weakly can fail to open the gas valve, so the oven never lights. Gas ovens have one igniter for bake and another for broil. Igniter and gas valve work is gas work.

You get a quote, labour and parts, before work starts. Ask whether the part is an original manufacturer part. If the range is not worth fixing, the technician tells you, and the visit fee usually stays.

Repair or replace

A US study of home components (NAHB, 2007) puts the typical life of an electric range at about 13 years and a gas range at about 15. Compare the quote with the price of a comparable new range today, with delivery and hook-up. Consumer Reports suggests replacing when the repair would cost more than half of that.

Where the model plate is

Open the oven door and look along the frame of the oven opening, or pull out the storage drawer and look at the frame behind it. Frigidaire also uses the inner side trim of the oven and the left side panel. On a separate cooktop the plate is usually underneath. Take a photo and add the model to the work order.

Before the technician arrives

Clear the cooktop and the floor in front of the range, and empty the storage drawer. The oven should be cool. If the range sits between cabinets with a tight fit, or the wall oven is built in at eye level, say so in the work order.

Questions

01The gas oven will not heat, and the burners on top work. What is it?

A common cause is a worn bake igniter: it glows and fails to open the gas valve. Gas ovens have separate igniters for bake and broil. Replacing either is gas work, so it needs a person with a TSSA gas certificate.

02Can any repair company work on my gas range?

In Ontario, only a person who holds a TSSA gas certificate may repair or service a gas appliance (O. Reg. 212/01, s. 6). Ask for the TSSA registration number on the call and check it with the contractor lookup on tssa.org.

03What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the home right away and leave doors open behind you if it is safe. Leave switches and appliances as they are. Call 911 or the Enbridge Gas emergency line, 1-866-763-5427, from outside.

04Is a cracked glass cooktop a repair?

Usually the top is replaced as a part. Leave the cooktop switched off until the technician has seen it, and send the model number so the company can check the part.

05What does the visit cost?

Ottawa firms that publish a fee charge about $80–90 + tax for the visit and diagnosis, and most waive it if you go ahead with the repair. The company confirms its own fee on the call.
