What a front-loader does differently

A front-load washer seals its water behind a rubber boot where a top-loader has a lid. It locks the door electrically, drains through a pump with a filter, and hangs a sideways drum on springs and shocks. One Ottawa firm notes that front-loaders can spin at 1,200 rpm or more. Every one of those choices makes the machine efficient, and each is a place where it can fail. The general washer repair page covers the rest.

Symptoms and what they usually point to

  • Water at the front during the wash. The door boot has a tear, a pinhole or a build-up that stops it sealing. A leak at the back or only during fill or drain points elsewhere.
  • Door stays locked. Water still in the drum, a failed lock or a board that does not release it.
  • Does not drain, or shows a drain code. Pump, pump filter or hose. The page on washer not draining lists the order a technician checks.
  • Violent shaking. Shocks, springs, transit bolts or an unlevel floor.
  • Grinding or a roar that grows each week. The tub bearing.
  • Dead display or stops mid-cycle. Door lock, main board, motor control board or wiring worn by vibration.

Write the symptom, the code and the point in the cycle where it happens.

What the technician checks on the visit

The technician reads the stored codes, tests the lock and its wiring, looks at the boot from both sides, tests the pump, checks the shocks and springs and turns the drum to feel the bearing. A short cycle shows fill, wash, drain and spin. You then get a quote. Ask for it in writing, with labour and parts on separate lines and tax shown.

A wet board, a split tub or a bad lock can cause water damage or a shock, so this work belongs to a trained technician.

What moves the price

The part decides most of it. One Ottawa firm’s list: pump $150–$350, door boot $200–$400, control board $250–$450, tub bearing or transmission $350–$600. A second firm prints a labour column of $199–$249 for boot and pump, $199–$299 for a bearing, dated 19.05.2026. The two lists use different bases, so read them as a market range; the quote comes after the test. The first firm adds that front-load and high-efficiency machines carry dearer seals, boards and bearings than plain top-loaders.

B&M also lists a late-night surcharge and a distance charge; ask the company that calls about its own.

Repair or replace, front-load edition

The bearing and the control board decide it. B&M favours repair on a washer younger than eight to ten when the bill stays under about half of a comparable new one, which a pump, lock or boot usually does. A bearing on a machine past ten, with a tired boot as well, makes the case for new. Capital Appliance Repair gives $700 to $1,800 or more for an installed new washer. Check the warranty too: LG’s WM1333HW page lists a 10-year parts-only DirectDrive motor term and a 5-year term on the liner and tub. More on the decision at repair or replace, and the brand pages Samsung and LG.

Ottawa homes and front-loaders

Condos and townhouses often put the washer in a closet or a stacked pair. Say so in the request: B&M notes that separating a stack adds labour. In a finished basement in Kanata or Orléans, a door-boot leak soaks carpet or laminate fast. If it leaks, close the valves behind the washer, then send the request.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Do you work on my brand and on front-loaders specifically?
  2. Is the boot, lock or pump part on the truck, or ordered for a second visit?
  3. If the fault is the tub bearing, can I get the quote and your view on repair against replacement?
  4. Is the visit fee credited when I approve the repair?
  5. Is there a charge for a visit after 9 PM, or for my address?

Have this ready for the call

  • Brand, model and serial number. On a front-loader the plate is usually on the door rim or the door frame.
  • The error code on the display, written down or photographed before it clears.
  • The point where it fails: filling, washing, draining or spinning, and whether it leaks at the front, the back or the bottom.
  • Whether it is stacked on a dryer or in a closet, and how wide the door to the laundry room opens.

Questions people ask

Why does my front-loader smell like mildew?

A front-loader seals water behind a rubber door boot. Moisture, detergent residue and lint collect in its fold and feed mould. One Ottawa firm says a smell that returns after cleaning can mean the boot needs replacing.

My front-load washer is locked with wet clothes inside. Is that a fault?

The door lock holds until the drum stops and the water is gone, so a locked door often points to a drain fault. If it stays locked, the lock or the control board can be at fault. Unplug the machine and put towels down. Forcing the handle can break the latch and double the repair, according to one Ottawa firm.

Why does a front-loader shake and walk across the floor on spin?

A front-load drum hangs on shocks and springs and can spin at 1,200 rpm or more. Worn shock absorbers, a broken spring, transit bolts left in a new machine or an unlevel floor all cause violent shaking.

Is a bearing repair on a front-loader worth it?

One Ottawa firm says usually yes under six or seven years old, and worth comparing with a new machine past ten. Splitting the tub is a long job. Set the written quote against a comparable new washer with delivery.

Do Samsung and LG front-loaders fail in the same places?

Direct-drive Samsung and LG machines share a pattern: drain pump, door lock and the motor’s hall sensor, one Ottawa firm reports. Whirlpool and Maytag front-loaders more often need boots and bearings. The brand pages for Samsung and LG list the codes each uses.
