In short
- Nepean had about 186,593 residents in the 2021 Census, per Wikipedia, and the name stays in daily use for the west end although the city was folded into Ottawa in 2001.
- Electric dryer repairs: $100 to $400 on one Ottawa firm's page; heating element $179 to $249 on another firm's list.
- A gas dryer needs a person who holds a gas certificate under Ontario Regulation 212/01. One Ottawa firm prices the gas diagnostic at $129 + tax.
- Cleaning the vent duct on its own is exempt from the certificate; work on the appliance needs it.

Nepean in 2026: a name that outlived the city
Nepean Township was laid out in 1792 as Township D. It gained city status in 1978 and had 124,878 residents when it merged into Ottawa in 2001. Wikipedia gives a 2021 population of about 186,593 for the area. People still say Nepean for the west-end suburbs, so a request that says Nepean needs a neighbourhood or a street to place it.
The former city covered a long list of communities. Wikipedia names Bells Corners, Centrepointe, Craig Henry, Arlington Woods, Parkwood Hills, Crestview, Leslie Park, Fisher Heights and Carleton Heights among them. Merivale Road is the retail centre, with Colonnade Road Business Park to its west, and the boulevard of Hunt Club West hosts a large auto mall. Ben Franklin Place in Centrepointe, the old Nepean city hall, now houses a library and a theatre.
What the dryer visit looks like
The first question for any dryer is gas or electric. Section 6(1) of Ontario Regulation 212/01 reserves installing, altering, repairing, servicing and removing a gas appliance for certificate holders. Section 6(2) carves out one thing: cleaning the duct, when that is all the person does. A technician who changes a valve coil or an igniter on a gas dryer needs the certificate. Ask for the TSSA registration number on the call.
An electric dryer joins 240-volt power, a heating element and a vent that carries lint to the outside wall. A blown thermal fuse is one of the cheap causes on the price list below. That repair still belongs to a technician; your part is to unplug the machine and wait.
What the price lists show
Three Ottawa firms print numbers for dryers. One says most electric dryer repairs fall between $100 and $400, with a blown thermal fuse or a door switch at the low end and a heating element higher. Another lists estimated labour: heating element $179 to $249, thermal fuse $99 to $199, drive belt $99 to $199, gas valve coil and igniter $179 to $249. A third prints a visit of $89 + tax for electric appliances and $129 + tax for gas dryers. The firms published these figures themselves. Your company sets its own price after it sees the machine, and the quote should list parts and labour. The detail is on dryer repair cost.
Nepean winters and the laundry room
Wikipedia puts Nepean’s winter snowfall at about 150 to 200 cm a year with an average winter temperature near −5 °C. Laundry often sits in a basement or an exterior-wall closet, so say where yours is. Mention in the request when the problem began and how it has changed, for example if a load now takes two cycles.
The September 2018 storm that produced six tornadoes in the Ottawa area hit Arlington Woods and Craig Henry in Nepean, Wikipedia notes. After storm damage, a power surge can reach a control board. If a dryer died after a storm or a power cut, say so in the request.
Pages to read next
If the drum turns but the clothes stay cold, read dryer not heating. For a gas model, gas dryer repair lists the gas rules in full. The main page is dryer repair, and brand notes for a common maker are on the Whirlpool page. The neighbours Barrhaven and Kanata have their own pages.
Who comes out to Nepean
One independent repair company that works the west end. It phones you, gives its TSSA number if the dryer is gas, then books and quotes before the work. A decline comes back to you first; we forward the request elsewhere only with your say-so. The Desk keeps out of pricing.
Questions to ask the company
- Is my part of Nepean inside your regular area, and does the visit fee change for my street?
- Is the visit fee higher for a gas dryer, and what is your TSSA registration number?
- Do you stock elements, fuses and igniters for my dryer brand?
- Does your quote include checking the vent path to the outside wall?
- What warranty comes with the part and the labour?
Have this ready for the call
- Gas or electric: look for a gas line and a shut-off valve behind the dryer, or a thick power cord
- Brand, model and serial number from the sticker inside the door or on the back, as a photo
- What the drum does: turns and stays cold, stops mid-cycle, heats and shuts off, will not start
- A clear path to the laundry room and room to pull the dryer out a metre
- How long the clothes take to dry now compared with a year ago
Questions people ask
Does a vent cleaner need a gas certificate?
Section 6(2) of Ontario Regulation 212/01 exempts duct cleaning when it is the only job and the cleaner does not interfere with the appliance. Repairing or servicing the gas dryer itself still needs a person who holds the certificate.
How can I tell whether my Nepean dryer is gas or electric?
Look behind it. A flexible metal gas line and a shut-off valve mean gas. A heavy power cord and no gas line mean electric. Write it in the request, since gas work is priced differently, for example $129 + tax for the diagnosis at one Ottawa firm.
My dryer is in a basement laundry. Does that change the visit?
It changes the access. Tell the company about the stairs, the width of the door and the space around the unit. A unit that has to come out for the work needs a clear path and room in front.
Bells Corners or Centrepointe: does the neighbourhood name matter?
It does. Wikipedia lists dozens of former Nepean neighbourhoods, including Bells Corners, Centrepointe, Craig Henry, Arlington Woods and Barrhaven. Name yours plus the nearest big road such as Merivale Road or Woodroffe Avenue so the company can place the address.
Is a dryer repair cheaper than a new machine?
One Ottawa firm says most dryer repairs run $100 to $400 and a new installed dryer $700 to $1,500 or more. It adds that a dryer younger than ten is usually worth repairing. Your own quote against that price list decides it.
My dryer stops after a few minutes. Is that a repair?
A dryer that heats and then shuts off points to a safety part. Unplug it, leave the load, and describe the pattern in the request so the technician can bring the likely parts.
