In short
- One Ottawa firm lists ice maker repairs at $130–$280 in total; a water inlet valve $130–$200, an ice maker assembly $160–$280.
- LG and Samsung model-specific repairs run $170–$320 on the same list.
- Most faults come from four places: the water valve, the fill tube, the ice maker module or the water supply and filter.
- A leak at the ice maker is a reason to close the fridge's water valve and say so in the request.

What an ice maker fault looks like
The complaints repeat. Ice missing altogether. Cubes half the usual size. A frozen block in the bin that will not break. Ice that tastes of the freezer. Water under the fridge or at the dispenser. Each one points the technician to a different part, so the more precisely you describe it, the better the company can prepare for the visit.
Note when it began and whether anything changed: a new filter, a fridge pushed back against the wall, a long power cut.
What the technician tests
An ice maker is a water system and a freezer in one. The technician follows the water from the line to the tray. One Ottawa firm names the common causes as a switched-off unit, a closed or restricted water supply, a clogged filter, a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve and a failed ice maker module. A valve that clicks and delivers no water is one finding. A frozen tube needs its root cause found as well as thawing.
Another Ottawa firm lists a frozen water line, a faulty inlet valve and wrong freezer temperature, and adds error codes, which it says usually point to the water supply, a sensor or temperature control. A code narrows the search; the technician still tests the parts. Write down any code on the display and give it in the request.
What the repair costs
The table above holds one Ottawa firm’s published list, read on 29.10.2026. A valve is the cheaper part, and an assembly costs more. LG and Samsung model-specific repairs run higher on that list. Doctor Appliance Repair prints no repair prices, and says its service call is free when you go ahead with the repair. Prices on the call can differ, so the written quote is the number that counts. Read fridge repair cost for the whole fridge, and the appliance repair cost guide for other appliances.
Brands and known patterns
Ice makers differ by brand. In-door ice makers on French-door fridges have more parts than a simple tray in the freezer. The Ottawa firm above reports freezing over on some LG in-door models and clumping on some Samsung French-door models. See the LG and Samsung pages, and the GE page for Profile models. A repair that follows a known fault pattern may be covered by the maker, so ask before you pay. More on that: warranties and recalls.
A leak is the one urgent case
A fridge with a water line holds pressure behind the ice maker. A cracked supply line or a stuck valve can run for hours. Close the shut-off valve to the fridge, switch the ice maker off, and move anything that water can reach. That is the only step to take before the technician arrives. Everything inside the fridge is a job for the trade.
Why this stays a technician’s job
The ice maker sits in the freezer next to heaters, fans and wiring, and the water line runs behind a heavy appliance. A wrong part or a refitted supply line can leak behind the fridge without showing. A company that quotes the repair in writing also carries the responsibility for the work. Ontario holds a business to within 10 per cent of a written estimate unless you approve more, which is one more reason to get the estimate first.
Where the request goes
To one independent repair company in your part of Ottawa that takes fridge and ice maker work. Say if your ice maker is a separate under-counter unit, since that is a different repair from one built into a fridge. The company calls, tests the water path and quotes; the Desk only passes the request along. Related: freezer repair and fridge repair.
Questions to ask the company
- Do you work on my fridge brand, and on an in-door or in-freezer ice maker?
- If I approve the ice maker repair, does the call-out come off the bill?
- Do you carry the water valve and the ice maker module for my model, or are they ordered?
- Does the quote cover the supply line and filter, or only the ice maker?
- How many days of cover come with a new valve or ice maker module?
Have this ready for the call
- Fridge brand, model and serial number. On many fridges the label is on a wall inside the fresh-food compartment.
- Where the ice maker sits: in the freezer, in the door, or a separate under-counter unit.
- What you see: no ice, small cubes, a frozen block in the bin, ice that tastes off, water on the floor.
- How old the water filter is and whether the fridge is on a water line.
- The location of the shut-off valve for the fridge's water line.
Questions people ask
How long until a repaired ice maker makes ice again?
One Ottawa firm says a new or newly repaired ice maker takes about 24 hours to start making ice and longer to fill the bin, and recommends discarding the first few batches. Ask the technician how long the particular model needs.
Why is my ice cloudy or does it taste odd?
A repair firm lists poor ice quality as a water-filtration or water-flow sign, with cloudiness, odd taste or misshapen cubes. The technician looks at the filter, the supply line and the ice maker assembly. Tell the company how old the filter is.
Where is the model label on a GE ice maker?
GE says the tag on a stand-alone ice maker sits on the right interior wall of the ice compartment. On GE side-by-side fridges it sits in the fresh-food section, on the floor, behind the crisper drawers or on a side wall or the ceiling. A photo of it goes in the request.
My LG or Samsung ice maker keeps freezing up. Is that known?
One Ottawa firm describes freezing over on some LG French-door models and clumping on some Samsung French-door models, and says LG offered extended coverage on some units. Terms vary, so have the model and serial number ready and check with the maker before you pay for a repair.
Water is pooling near the ice maker. What now?
Close the fridge’s water shut-off valve, switch the ice maker off and say in the request that there is a leak. Leaks near an ice maker can come from a valve, a supply line or a drain, and water on the floor damages flooring and the fridge’s parts if left.
