Two checks that can change the bill

An appliance that fails inside its warranty is repaired at the warranty’s cost. An appliance on a recall list is handled through the recall. Do both before you approve a repair quote, and before you replace the unit: repair or replace covers the second decision.

What Ontario says about warranties

Ontario.ca describes a warranty as a promise by the business to repair or replace a defective item for a period of time after purchase. Its advice is to read the terms: how long the warranty lasts, what defects it covers, who offers it (the store or the manufacturer), if you get a repair or a replacement, and if it covers both parts and labour. The page was last updated on 25.09.2024.

Typical periods, with one brand as an example

Samsung Canada’s warranty page gives a table. Refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges and dishwashers carry 12 months for parts and labour from the original purchase date. A fridge’s digital inverter compressor and a washer’s digital inverter motor each get a 10-year parts term. The page says the periods are a guide and that your manual or warranty card has the final word for your model.

Other brands publish different terms. The purchase date starts the clock, so keep the receipt.

Extended warranties

Ontario says an extended warranty offers the same promise over a longer period, usually for an added cost. Its list: confirm the extra cost is worth the added protection (for a low-cost item a newer model may be cheaper), read the terms before signing, compare prices, check if your credit card already provides protection, and research the company. If it closes, you may be unable to enforce the plan.

Recalls: where and how to look

The Government of Canada recalls and safety alerts site has a search box for product names, and recent entries appear on the front page. A notice says which models are affected and how to find the model number. The 2024 Samsung slide-in range recall, posted 29.08.2024, covered about 326,250 units sold from 2013 to August 2024 and 19 model numbers. The remedy was free knob locks or covers.

A fridge example is closer to Ottawa kitchens this year. The Galanz Retro refrigerator recall, reported on 25.09.2026, covered 10,045 units in Canada sold between December 2018 and December 2020, with an internal electrical fault that can ignite. Owners are told to unplug the unit and register for an in-home repair.

What to give the company

Brand, model and serial number go into the request, plus any plan you hold. If the warranty applies, the plan or the manufacturer is the first call. If it does not, the company quotes the repair after diagnosis. One Ottawa firm publishes an $89 plus tax visit fee applied toward an approved repair.

When the repair is yours to pay

Outside warranty, the quote is the document that matters. Ask for the fault, the part, labour and tax on separate lines, the visit fee treatment, and the warranty on the new part and on labour, in writing. Part-by-part prices from the Ottawa firms are in appliance repair cost. For a washer that stops draining, see washer not draining.

If the check comes up empty

With neither a warranty nor a recall in play, a paid repair is the route, and a request brings one independent Ottawa repair company to the phone. Tell it what you found on the card and the recall site; it quotes after diagnosis. The Desk gives no warranties of its own and sets no prices.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Is the part I need covered by the manufacturer's warranty, and who submits the claim?
  2. If the warranty applies, do I pay a visit fee, or does the manufacturer pay the company?
  3. Which warranty do you give on your own repair, on the part and on labour, in writing?
  4. Can you check my model number against the recall list while you are here?
  5. If I bought an extended plan, which company do I call first?

Have this ready for the call

  • The receipt or order confirmation with the purchase date
  • Brand, model and serial number, photographed from the label
  • The warranty card, or the extended-plan contract and its phone number
  • The list of earlier repairs on this appliance, with dates

Questions people ask

How long does a manufacturer warranty usually last?

Samsung Canada’s page shows a 12-month base warranty on refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges and dishwashers, counted from the original purchase date. It adds a 10-year term on digital inverter compressors and washer motors. Other brands set their own periods, so read the card.

How do I find out whether my appliance is recalled?

Search the product name on the Government of Canada recalls and safety alerts site. Each notice names the models affected and says where the model number sits. For the 2024 Samsung range recall, it is inside the upper left corner of the door or in the storage bin at the bottom.

What do I do with a recalled fridge?

For the Galanz Retro fridge recall of September 2026, owners were told to stop using the fridge, unplug it and register on the company’s site for an in-home repair. Recalled products cannot be resold or given away in Canada, so a recalled unit does not go to a neighbour.

Is an extended warranty worth buying?

Ontario lists what to check: whether the extra cost is worth the protection, the terms before you sign, the price against other plans, and if a credit card already covers the item. It also warns that if the warranty company closes, you may be unable to enforce the plan.

Can the technician sell me something on the visit?

Ontario bars businesses from selling furnaces, air conditioners, air cleaners, water heaters and water treatment devices at your home unless you started the transaction. During a repair visit the business may not sign a new agreement for them unless you agreed in advance or already hold a contract. A contract for those items signed at home carries a 10-day cooling-off period.
